The road south from Tirana towards the Albanian Riviera

How to get from Tirana Airport to Dhërmi

Almost everyone who visits Dhërmi lands at Tirana International Airport first, and almost everyone underestimates what comes next. This is an honest account of the options, written by people who drive the route.

Tirana International Airport sits at Rinas, north-west of the capital. Dhërmi sits on the Ionian coast in the far south-west, below the Llogara Pass. Between them is most of the length of Albania, a mountain crossing, and no direct public transport of any kind.

That last point is the one people miss when planning. Searching for a bus from the airport to Dhërmi returns results, but they are describing connections rather than a service — and the connections are the hard part.

The four realistic options

  • Private transfer

A booked vehicle and driver from the terminal to your accommodation. One journey, no changes, adapts to a delayed flight. The most expensive option per person for a solo traveller, and often the cheapest for a family of four.

  • Bus or furgon with a change

A shuttle or taxi into Tirana, a long-distance coach towards Vlorë or Sarandë, then a coastal service. Cheapest by a distance. Slowest, most luggage handling, and the timetable does not care when your flight lands.

  • Hire car

Flexible once you arrive, and useful for a longer stay. You then drive the Llogara Pass yourself, possibly tired, possibly in the dark, and deal with beach parking in August.

  • Domestic flight or ferry

Not a practical route to Dhërmi. There is no useful air or sea connection that gets you closer than driving does.

What the drive actually involves

The route runs south from Rinas through central Albania towards Fier and then Vlorë. This part is mostly good main road and goes quickly enough.

After Vlorë the character changes. The road follows the coast to Orikum, then climbs into the Ceraunian Mountains through Llogara National Park. The pass itself is the high point — literally and scenically — and the descent to the coast is a long sequence of hairpin bends with the Riviera spread out below.

This is the section that defeats estimates based on distance. It is not a fast road, it should not be driven fast, and the weather at the top can differ sharply from the beach you can see from it.

Why we do not publish a journey time

You will find confident figures elsewhere. We do not publish one, because the honest answer varies with the month, the traffic, roadworks, the weather on the pass and exactly where in Dhërmi you are staying.

When you book a transfer with us we give you a recommended departure or arrival time for your specific journey and date. That is worth more than a number on a web page.

Arriving late at night

A large share of flights into Tirana land in the evening. That matters, because the onward options thin out sharply after dark: long-distance coaches stop running, coastal services certainly do, and you are then looking at a night in Tirana you had not planned.

A pre-booked transfer is the straightforward answer to a late arrival. The driver is waiting whenever you land, and the Llogara descent is someone else's problem.

If you are arriving very late and travelling with children, it is worth telling us when you book so we can plan the journey around it.

What to send when booking a transfer

  • Flight number and airline
  • Arrival date and scheduled time, in Albanian local time
  • Number of passengers, including children, and ages if you need child seats
  • Number of large suitcases and anything bulky
  • The name and address of your accommodation in Dhërmi, or a map pin
  • A phone or WhatsApp number you can be reached on after you land

Doing it by public transport anyway

If budget is the deciding factor, it can be done. You travel from the airport into Tirana, then from Tirana to Vlorë by coach or furgon, then from Vlorë along the coast — and the last leg is the one that may not exist on the day you want it, particularly outside the summer months.

Coastal services also stop on the main road above the villages rather than at your accommodation. In Dhërmi that means a descent of several hundred metres with your luggage.

It is a legitimate way to travel and plenty of people do it. Just plan it as a day of travelling rather than a transfer, and have a fallback for the final leg.

Book an airport transfer

Send your flight details and where you are staying, and we will confirm the pickup.

What to send us

  • Where we pick you up — a hotel, apartment, beach or airport terminal
  • Where you are going
  • The date and the time
  • How many passengers, including children
  • How much luggage, and anything bulky
  • A flight number, if you are arriving or departing

Send those details and we reply with the vehicle, the price and the pickup arrangement. Nothing is booked until we confirm it.

We use your details only to arrange your journey. Nothing is stored on this website.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct bus from Tirana airport to Dhërmi?

No. Travelling by public transport means at least two changes, usually through Tirana and Vlorë, and the final coastal leg is seasonal and infrequent.

Should I hire a car at the airport instead?

It depends on your trip. A car suits long stays with a lot of independent movement. For a short stay, a late arrival, or a group with luggage, a transfer usually works out better — and you avoid driving the Llogara Pass straight off a flight.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

If you have booked a transfer, we follow the flight and the pickup moves with it. That is the single biggest practical advantage over a timetabled connection.
